The Science Education Research Group at Niigata University is making efforts to find ways to help students and teachers learn and teach science more effectively in this rapidly changing society. We value student science learning most to proceed our research and teaching.

Our research interests spread in a wide range of fields. On one hand, we conduct international comparative studies of science teaching to have a global perspective. On the other hand, we conduct research for analyzing science lessons to help teachers at local schools improve their lessons through lesson study. While we materially develop science experiments to help students better understand the concept often times with the use of technology, we spend a lot of time developing instructional strategies such as good questioning techniques and effective modes of study.

As for our teaching, we are helping pre-service teachers learn theories and practice of science education. We offer courses for the college students to learn about inquiry-based science teaching. “Hands-on, minds-on” is the phrase we frequently use to describe our ways of teaching science. We work together with teachers to help them improve science lessons.
